The Hip Hop Architect–Michael Ford– is bringing his camp for middle- and high-school aged students to the Oxon Hill Library next week and registration is still open (and free!).
“We’ve decimated cities that were built by the hands of African Americans – like Black Bottom in Detroit, or here in the Bronx, when they built the Cross Bronx Expressway through a community of color,” Ford told Rolling Stone. “Those decisions are made by people outside of those communities. There are a limited amount of people at the table to advocate for our communities.”
Hip Hop Architecture Camp, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 23-27 at Oxon Hill Library, uses Hip Hop culture as a catalyst to introduce participants from underrepresented communities to architecture, urban planning, and placemaking. “The Camp is based on the 4Cs, which are Creativity, Collaboration, Communication and Critical Thinking,” according to the hiphoparchitecture.com.
By the end of the program, the campers create a music video featuring their design concepts.
